描述
Codex Seraphinianus, created by Italian artist Luigi Serafini in the late 1970s, is one of the world’s most mysterious art books. It resembles an encyclopedia from an alien world, filled with fantastical illustrations of surreal plants, creatures, machines, and societies — all described in an invented, unreadable language with a unique alphabet.
The book consists of several chapters mimicking scientific or encyclopedic organization, covering topics like biology, architecture, technology, and human behavior — but all in dreamlike, impossible forms.
Its purpose has never been fully explained; Serafini himself described it as a visual representation of the feeling a child experiences when first encountering books they cannot yet read — a sense of wonder before comprehension.
The Codex challenges the boundaries between art, language, and meaning, inviting readers to explore imagination without translation. It’s celebrated as a masterpiece of surrealism, visual poetry, and creative mystery — a modern Book of Wonders that speaks directly to the subconscious. 🌌
