Quiero compartir con ustedes una historia de La Piedad, una ciudad que se encuentra en Michoacán, México.
La historia se llama “El río que iluminó una ciudad”.
Se trata de la relación que la gente de La Piedad estableció con el río Lerma, uno de los más grandes de México. Este río nace en el centro del país (en el valle de Toluca) y recorre más de 700 kilómetros, cruzando montañas, valles y otros estados de la República, hasta llegar al Océano Pacífico. Su paso por La Piedad recorre poco más de 16 kilómetros.
La gente de esta ciudad ha aprovechado sus aguas desde la antigüedad, tanto para obtener alimento como para beneficiarse de su fuerza para producir movimiento; sobresale el periodo conocido como el porfiriato, que va de 1877 a 1911. En ese tiempo, se utilizó la fuerza de sus aguas para hacer funcionar molinos para trigo, y unos cuantos años más tarde, también se usaron para generar energía eléctrica. Llegados a este punto de la Historia, la necesidad de contar con esa energía llevó a los piedadenses a construir la primera turbina de Latinoamérica.
