描述
De første håndballaktivitetene for jenter var det Rising Idretsforening som sto for. Rising håndballag ble stiftet 19. juli 1945. To måneder senere fulgte laget med i samemenslutningen med Mæla AIL og Gjerpen IL, og ble således omdøpt til Gjerpen IF Håndballgruppe. Fra 2008 er navnet nå bare Gjerpen Håndball.
Gjerpen Håndball har en lang og stolt historie, allerede i 1947 ble det en fantastisk sesong for håndballen med kretsmestere både på A-lag, B-lag og juniorer som ble nr. 3 i serien.
Det store steget i håndballen kom i forbindelse med at Terje Andersen foran sesongen 1981/82 ble trener. Gjerpen Håndball entret 1. divisjon året etter. Terje Andersen fikk med seg Hanne Hegh, og etter hvert kom flere gode spiller til. I debutsesongen i 1. divisjon endte Gjerpen Håndball til slutt på en 8. plass etter en knallsterk åpning, som fikk stor oppmerksomhet i både VG og Dagbladet.
Gjerpen Håndball sikret seg sitt første norgesmesterskap i sesongen 1985/86, etter å ha slått Byåsen på hjemmebane i en stappfull Skienshall. De første norgesmesterne våre var:
Laget: Anne Migliosi, Hanne Hegh, Anni Sandersen, Kjerstin Andersen, Anne Hilde Råstad, Gunn Marum, Ina Franche, Cecilia Smith, Ina Johansen, Tove Bergene, Bente Eriksrød, Bente Hultin, Hege Glenna, Kristin Pedersen og Liv Schønhardt.
Trenere: Terje Andersen og Jan Arne Eriksrød
I sesongen 2005/06 kom laget til semifinalen i cupvinnercupen.
Laget har vunnet NM-gull fem ganger og sluttspillet tre ganger. Sesongen 2006/07 kom Gjerpen på tredjeplass i serien, ble slått ut i semifinalen i sluttspillet og nådde kvartfinalen i cupvinnercupen. I sesongen 2008/09 tapte laget igjen semifinalen i cupvinnercupen.
Gjerpens kvinnelag i håndball er nå tilbake i toppen av norsk kvinnehåndball etter nedrykket i 2009/2010 sesongen.
