First Stone was an experimental international research programme that explored the potential of Portuguese Stone. Centred on the unique physical and visual characteristics of the various types of stone found across Portugal’s landscape, First Stone intersected production and design through the development of innovative applications for this exceptional material, highlighting its quality as well as the vast industry that is connected to its extraction and transformation.
Remaining true to its objective of revealing the possibilities of Portuguese Stone as well as the sociocultural context that it encapsulates, First Stone collaborated throughout these 6 years with Portuguese and international architects, designers and prominent contemporary artists. Focussing on all stages and dimensions of this material as well as its impact on the environment, the projects explored unconventional approaches, reinventing stone through the use of other materials and alternative concepts.
Designed to be used intuitively, this application seeks to improve accessibility to the different aspects of the programme, providing research tools with a ludic and interactive approach.
The First Stone Application presents the projects of the following authors: Ai Weiwei, Álvaro Siza, Amanda Levete, Bijoy Jain, Carla Juaçaba, Carsten Höller, Claudia Moreira Salles, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Elemental, Estudio Campana Fernanda Fragateiro, Fernando Brízio, Frith Kerr, Ian Anderson, Jasper Morrison, João Luís Carrilho da Graça, Jonathan Barnbrook, Jonathan Olivares, Jorge Silva, Julião Sarmento, Manuel Aires Mateus, Marina Abramović, Mia Hägg, Michael Anastassiades, Michel Rojkind, Miguel Vieira Baptista, Paulo David, Pedro Falcão, Peter Saville, Philippe Starck, R2, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Sagmeister & Walsh, Studio MK27, Vhils and Vladimir Djurovic.
Promoted by Assimagra and conceived by experimentadesign, the First Stone Programme was co-financed by FEDER under COMPETE2020.
