Aviation authorities require day and night flight time splits, but calculating a precise breakdown is genuinely difficult without specialised tools. The sun’s position changes continuously along your route, and twilight durations vary dramatically with latitude, season, and groundspeed. Most pilots rely on rough estimates or extrapolate from departure and arrival sun events. Many logbook apps do the same, which leads to significant inaccuracies on longer flights or operations at extreme latitudes.
Flight Day/Night Calculator makes professional-grade accuracy simple. It performs minute-by-minute position tracking with embedded astronomy algorithms and full twilight calculations, all working completely offline. No guesswork. No manual plotting. Just accurate results you can log with confidence.
How It Works
The app computes your aircraft’s position every minute using your departure, destination, and optional waypoints (up to 20). At each point it determines the sun’s elevation angle to classify day and night using internationally recognised civil twilight definitions. You can also show nautical and astronomical twilight phases, with sunrise and sunset calculated at sea level or corrected for cruise altitude.
