My AI Eyes is a free smart accessibility app designed specifically for visually impaired users and seniors, providing instant visual-to-audio conversion through advanced AI technology. Whether you're looking for items at home or reading product information while shopping, this app serves as your reliable digital companion.
Core Features:
The app features two core intelligent recognition capabilities. Real-time object detection accurately identifies various items in indoor environments and announces what's ahead through natural, clear voice narration, helping users better understand their surroundings. The OCR text recognition feature reads and identifies all types of text content, including product labels, expiration dates, and even personal letters, making written information instantly accessible.
Advanced Technology:
Built on an enhanced YOLOv8 neural network architecture, the app leverages iOS native CoreML machine learning framework and text-to-speech technology to ensure accurate recognition and smooth performance. Through rigorous algorithm optimization and testing, our improved detection network achieved an outstanding mAP@0.5 score of 0.673, significantly boosting recognition accuracy and reliability.
Accessible Design Philosophy:
My AI Eyes embraces the philosophy that simplicity creates wonder. Users can quickly activate app features using "Hey Siri" voice commands with zero learning curve required. The app works immediately upon launch, delivering an intuitive voice-guided experience.
Most importantly, this app runs entirely on your smartphone without requiring any expensive additional equipment or devices. By transforming complex computer vision technology into an easy-to-use everyday tool, My AI Eyes ensures that everyone who needs assistance can access this technology, empowering users to live more independently and confidently regardless of their economic situation.
Research Background:
This algorithm was developed as part of an academic exploration by Dr. Humaira Ashraf, Senior Lecturer Level 1 and Project Director of the Master of Applied Computing program at Taylor's University Malaysia (ranked #36 in QS Asia University Rankings 2025), leading the AI graduate research group. The research team members include Qu FeiLong, Dai DeLin, Shao MingDi, Ding Xiao, and Wang ZiRui.
The development was motivated by alarming global research findings on population aging and visual impairment prevalence. According to a 2023 study published in JAMA Ophthalmology, vision impairment in US adults 71 years and older reached 27.8%, with near visual acuity impairment affecting 16.3% of those aged 71-74 years and rising significantly to 37.9% among those 85 years and older. This age-related increase has created a major public health crisis globally.
To address this growing challenge, the team optimized the YOLOv8 model to improve accuracy, efficiency and robustness of real-time object detection, and integrated a voice alert system for immediate feedback of safety-critical scenes, enhancing environmental perception and independent living ability for visually impaired people.
