The WiFi system menu bars are not enough to indicate just how fast (or slow) a WiFi network can be. The sample pictures above are from four different WiFi networks that all showed a signal strength of 3 bars. But the speeds varied from only 144 megabits to about 1100 megabits.
The "WiFi Transmit Rate" is the speed used by your WiFi radio to send packets to your WiFi base station -- the first step your data takes in its trip to the Internet. If it's really slow, all of your Internet connections will be slow too.
Every few seconds the Mac WiFi automatically adjusts its Transmit Rate to try and get the best performance possible. For example it can speed it up if the radio signal from the base station gets stronger, or slow it down if there is too much traffic or an increase in radio frequency noise.
WiFi Health monitors the Transmit Rate and displays the current speed in the menu bar. This lets you easily check it whenever you suspect your network is slower than usual. And with a single click it will bring up a simple graph showing the Transmit Rate, signal strength, noise levels and Signal-to-Noise ratio for the last few minutes.
WiFi Health works with any kind of base station and generates no additional network traffic. It is designed to be left running and always available for a quick glance to check on your Transmit Rate.
By itself, WiFi Health will not make your WiFi faster. But it can help you to routinely monitor your WiFi Transmit Rate and possibly discover reasons for it being slow.
