How to Play Gaps Solitaire (Step-by-Step)
Follow these simple steps to learn how to play Gaps Solitaire. You’ll be lining up cards and filling those “gaps” in no time:
Setup the Deal: Shuffle a standard 52-card deck and deal 4 rows of 13 cards face-up on the table. Remove all the Aces from the layout, which creates four empty slots or gaps. (These empty spaces are where the game gets its name – gaps left by the missing Aces.) The goal is to arrange each row in ascending order from 2 up to King in the same suit.
Fill the Gaps in Sequence: Only certain cards can be moved into a gap. You can move a card into an empty space if the card to the left of that gap is of the same suit and exactly one rank lower than the card you’re moving. For example, if you have a gap immediately to the right of a 3♣, you can place the 4♣ in that gap. If a gap is at the far left end of a row (meaning no card is to its left), you may fill it only with a 2 of any suit – this will start a new sequence in that suit. Important: Any gap immediately to the right of a King is considered “dead” – no card can be placed there (since Kings are the highest card, you can’t continue a sequence beyond them).
Rearrange and Continue: Keep moving cards into valid gaps, building each row in increasing order (2, 3, 4, ... up to K) by suit. You can choose which suit goes in which row – once you place a 2 in a leftmost gap, that row is dedicated to that suit. Continue filling gaps whenever a correct move is available. If you manage to line up part of a sequence (say 2♥ through 6♥ in one row), those cards stay in place while you work on filling the remaining gaps in all rows.
Reshuffle When Stuck: If you reach a point where no more moves are possible (for example, all remaining gaps are “dead” behind Kings or there are no adjacent-rank cards to play), don’t worry! Gaps Solitaire allows you to reshuffle the unsolved cards to get a fresh chance. Gather all cards that are not yet in order and reshuffle them, then deal them back out into the gaps. The cards that were already in correct sequence stay put, and each row will have its gaps re-created after the last ordered card. Typically, you can reshuffle the layout up to 3 times per game (so you have three chances to mix the remaining cards and continue the game). Use your reshuffles wisely to improve your odds – plan your moves so that you leave as few cards out of place as possible before shuffling.
Winning the Game: You win 🎊 when you have all four rows neatly arranged in order from 2 through King in their respective suits, with each King at the far right end of its row (and thus a gap after each King). In total, all 48 non-Ace cards will be in perfect sequence. If you fill every sequence correctly before running out of reshuffles, congratulations – you’ve won Gaps Solitaire! 🎉 If you exhaust all your allowed reshuffles and still can’t arrange all cards, the game ends (you can always start a new round and try again). Remember, Gaps Solitaire can be tricky, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t win every time. Part of the fun is trying again and improving your strategy! 😉
Quick Tips: Try to avoid leaving empty gaps immediately to the right of Kings (since those gaps can’t be used) and focus on creating gaps on the left side whenever possible. Planning which 2’s to place in the leftmost column first can make a big difference – choose a two that will free up the most moves next. With practice, you’ll develop a feel for which moves set you up for success and when to reshuffle for a better chance.
