TextSS is a free tool that replaces text inside many HTML and text files at once. Work that used to mean opening every file one by one can be done for a whole folder in a single run.

■ Three steps
1. Register the files you want to change (a whole folder, subfolders included if you like)
2. Register the text to search for and the text to replace it with
3. Check what will happen, then start

■ No regular expressions required
Use wildcards for fuzzy search and replace: * (any string), ? (any single character) and # (any single digit). What you group with ( ) on the search side can be inserted as $1 on the replace side. Regular expressions (.NET engine) are there when you want them.

■ Encodings are detected for you
Detection uses three engines (Jcode.pm-based, NKF-equivalent and UTF.Unknown) together with the charset in the HTML Meta tag. Japanese Shift_JIS, JIS, EUC, UTF-8, UTF-16 and UTF-32 are detected automatically, and with UTF.Unknown selected as the engine so are many other languages such as Chinese, Korean and Russian. The code page and the BOM can be converted as part of the same replacement.

■ Replaces text inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint
In Word and PowerPoint, text split across several internal runs is still found and replaced without breaking the formatting (when a single word spans several formats, the first one is used). Excel always protects formula, numeric and date cells. In PowerPoint, slide text, presenter notes, slide masters, slide layouts and review comments are covered. Password-protected documents are skipped automatically.

■ Media metadata too (auxiliary feature)
Batch-replace the title, comment, author and location (GPS) of files such as JPEG, MP3 and MP4. The audio, video and image data itself is never modified.

■ Try it before you commit
A test replacement shows you the result without touching the files. Confirmation mode lets you approve each hit one at a time. Automatic backup when files are registered, manual backup, restore and a replacement log are all included, and the built-in File Compare shows the before and after side by side.

■ Other features
- Grep extraction in four modes (keep only matching lines, extract only what matched, and their inverses), plus a fifth mode that replaces only the matched part and writes it out. Matching uses regular expressions, and lookaround is available in Grep extraction.
- 27 enhanced conversions: full-width and half-width, upper and lower case, hiragana and katakana, line endings, Kangxi radicals and ordinary forms, Chinese traditional and simplified, and more. They can be applied only to what a wildcard or a regular expression matched.
- Pattern lists let you save search and replace pairs and run several of them at once. Keep separate lists per purpose and exchange them with Excel through CSV import and export.
- The interface is available in English and Japanese, in light and dark colour schemes, with syntax colouring.

■ Price and information handling
It is free. There are no ads and no account is needed. The app itself never connects to the internet (links such as the help open in your default browser).
