Description
Each headline card shows a thumbnail (when the feed supplies one), a topic pill, a relative timestamp ("5m ago", "3h ago"), and a short summary, with a link straight through to the full article. A search box filters your whole current digest by keyword across every enabled topic at once. Save any headline to a dedicated Saved tab for later, and export your saved list to CSV whenever you want a copy outside the app.
Most RSS feeds don't send the CORS headers a browser page needs to read them directly, so every feed is fetched through api.rss2json.com's free public bridge, which adds that header and hands back JSON - the same kind of free public service this portfolio already relies on for maps and routing in other apps. Each topic's headlines are cached locally for a freshness window you control (5 minutes to 1 hour), so switching tabs doesn't refetch everything; hit Refresh any time to force an immediate update. If a feed can't be reached, its card shows the last cached copy or a clear retry prompt - one broken feed never blanks out the rest of your digest.
Want news from closer to home? A Local news setting in Settings adds your own country as a digest section, sourced from that country's free, publicly published national broadcaster feed - not just the built-in "UK" topic. Thirteen countries are covered (United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany, France, India, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand, Singapore, Italy); your country is guessed from your device's language setting the first time you open the app, but you can change it any time, and it stays off until you switch it on.
Every topic - built-in, custom or local - gets its own colour, used on its section heading and topic pills and on a quick-jump pill bar above the digest, so a five- or six-topic digest reads as a set of distinct sections rather than one flat colour. The top story in each topic renders as a larger featured card, and every fourth card renders smaller and tighter, so the page has a varied, magazine-style rhythm instead of a uniform grid of identical tiles. Headlines you've already clicked through to dim slightly with a small "Read" tag on your next visit, so it's easy to spot what's new.
The topbar, tab bar and quick-jump pill bar stay pinned to the top of the window as you scroll, so jumping to a topic never loses your navigation, and jump pills no longer dim when inactive - a coloured ring simply marks the current section. Each topic section has an "Aa" button that cycles its own card density between comfortable, compact and spacious, so a busy topic can run tighter while one you read in depth can run roomier. A spotlight banner above the whole digest surfaces the single newest headline across every enabled topic as a full-width hero card. The Save button on every card is now a small icon with a tooltip, pinned to the same spot in the bottom-right corner of every card regardless of its height.
What it does:
Nine built-in BBC News topic feeds, four enabled by default (World, Business, Technology, Sport) - turn any of the rest on from Settings
Local news for a country you pick, from thirteen free national broadcaster feeds - not just the built-in UK topic
Add any custom RSS or Atom feed URL as your own topic
Colour-coded topics with a quick-jump pill bar to hop straight to any section
Featured/compact card sizing so the digest reads as a varied page, not a flat grid
Read-state dimming so you can see at a glance what you've already opened
Sticky navigation bar so jumping between topics never loses the topbar or jump pills
Per-topic density control (comfortable/compact/spacious) via an "Aa" button on each section
Top-story spotlight banner showing the newest headline across all enabled topics
Card-grid digest grouped by topic, with thumbnails, relative timestamps and summaries
Live keyword search across the whole current digest
Save headlines to a Saved tab; export saved articles to CSV
Configurable articles-per-topic count and cache freshness window
Light/dark theme that remembers your choice
Clear cached-copy/retry handling when a feed can't be reached
Your topic choices, custom feeds, local-news country, saved articles, read history and cached headlines all stay on your device via local storage - only the RSS feed fetches themselves go out over the internet, via the free rss2json.com bridge.
