Black Ink opens and solves puzzles that use the Across Lite format, which are distributed by several free and paid sources in the United States, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, American Values Club, and others.

  • This update is a quick fix to 2.4.3 to address the following issues:

    - Apply the expected rounded corners to the app icon
    - Fix the display of HTML based clues on macOS 10.15

    Version 2.4.3 included the following changes:

    - Updated application icon to match the increasingly popular rounded-rectangle style
    - Fixed a bug that prevented smartened quotes from appearing in clue text
    - Fixed a bug that caused some clue rows to be too short or too tall
    - Improved the appearance of the overlay special entry field on a future OS update

    Version 2.4.2 included a number of changes to make the experience of solving puzzles better, including improvements to the main window clue text display, a fix for rendering images in clue text, and more! Here's the complete list of changes:

    - Improved layout of puzzle clue at top of window
    - Restored and improved handling of inline images in puzzle clues
    - Alt text on inline clue images are now conveyed to accessibility and tooltip text
    - Fixed a bug that caused the "Congratulations" panel to appear twice if auto-check is enabled
    - Fixed a bug that caused new puzzles opened without a save file to prompt for saving upon solving
    - Clues with images are now handled more correctly in printouts

    Version 2.4.1 included the following improvements:

    - Fix a bug that could prevent the newest available puzzle from being selected in the calendar
    - Quicklook previews of puzzles with checkmark, etc., symbols are now shown in color
    - Restored the functionality of the built-in crash reporting mechanism
    - When duplicating puzzles from the app's sandbox, the app now encourages saving outside the sandbox
    - Fix a problem that could cause previously solved puzzles to open as new after changing system date format

    Version 2.4 was a significant update with the following changes:

    - New: Quick Look support for puzzle files lets you preview puzzles stored outside of Black Ink

    - New: "Smartened" clue text for prettier quotes, dashes, and ellipses (“”, ‘’, —, …)

    - Printing improvements
    - New: Ink Saver option for text darkness in addition to grid darkness
    - New: Sizing options to specify larger or smaller grid and clues
    - New: Option to specify that the grid should print to a separate page
    - Restore header and footer sections on printed pages
    - Fix a crash that could occur when printing puzzle clues separately from the puzzle grid

    - In Dark Mode, the "white" puzzle squares are now a little lighter gray, for better contrast

    - Added a setting allowing automatic movement to next word after filling a word

    - Added a setting to configure the space bar to switch puzzle direction

    - Multi-character answers are now drawn inset slightly more from the edge of the square

    - Overlay images are now drawn on top of the puzzle grid contents and clue numbers

    - Improved error handling for scenarios where an app like TripMode is blocking network access

    - Fix a bug that could cause overlay images to draw outside the bounds of the puzzle grid

    - Escape key now causes About Box and Settings windows to close
