Popis
The city of Reykjavík already pays the contractor who runs the basic parking payment system — the part that really matters. Everything else — seven private apps and a service charge on top of the city’s fees — is a political decision, not a technical necessity. Seven apps. Seven masks on the same body.
Rósa Parks is free and open source software that proves in practice that the city could design and operate the interface itself, instead of outsourcing it to private parties like EasyPark and Parka that charge service fees to residents.
Important
This app is an independent project of the Socialist Party of Iceland. It is neither operated by, in collaboration with, nor licensed by the City of Reykjavík, the Reykjavík Parking Fund, or any other public institution. Payments through Rósa Parks are only considered a sample until the city provides a formal backend connection.
What the app does
• Shows toll zones and price lists on a map, based on official data from the City of Reykjavík. Original sources:

• Allows you to start and end a parking session by entering a license plate number (sample — not related to official billing)
• Shows time and cost in real time
• Keeps track of active sessions and recently completed sessions
What the app does not do
• No ads
• No monitoring and no measurement systems (neither Firebase, Google Analytics nor Sentry)
• No third-party software development kits (SDKs)
• No user accounts, no registration and no carpooling
• No selling or sharing of data to advertisers or other third parties
Political frame
Rósa Parks is neither a startup nor a commercial product. There is good will behind the project — the Socialist Party of Iceland wants to point out the absurdity of the current arrangement and show in black and white that a free parking app is technically simple to implement. Private parties charging a service charge on top of the fees that citizens already pay to the city — that is a political choice, not a technical necessity.
