The rules are as follows:
- According to Section 54 of the Federal Election Regulations, everyone has access to the polling station during the voting process and the determination and certification of the election results. If you would like to be present during the count, arrive unannounced a few minutes before the polling station closes (i.e., shortly before 6 p.m.).
- Your right to be present must be granted in such a way that you can actually observe the counting process at any time.
- You do not have to accept a seat from which you cannot see the process.
- You do not have to be asked to leave during the process (e.g., after the voting has ended) – according to Section 67 of the Federal Election Regulations, the count must take place without interruption immediately after the voting process!
``` - If the election officials deem you an obstacle to the vote counting process, they cannot simply remove you from the room, as the election workers themselves do not have the right to send you away – only the police can do that!
- Don't forget to also inquire in advance in your municipality about the location where the absentee ballots will be counted, so you can observe this process as well. The proportion of absentee voters has steadily increased in recent years. In 2021, almost half of all voters opted for absentee voting.
``` After the votes are counted, the presiding officer will announce the election results orally, providing the following information:
1. the number of eligible voters
2. the number of voters
3. the number of valid and invalid first votes
4. the number of valid and invalid second votes
5. the number of first votes cast for each individual candidate
6. the number of second votes cast for each state party list
