The tiles hold otter faces instead of the digits 1 through 9. Place them so the same face never repeats in a row, a column, or a region. The rules are ordinary sudoku — but with faces instead of figures, the board reads at a glance. The otters look toward wherever your finger goes.
■ No two boards are shaped alike
1,000 puzzles, from tiny 5×5 grids to 12×12 ones. The regions aren't neat rectangles — their shapes change from board to board, so two puzzles of the same size still solve nothing alike.
■ Carry shells in, keep what's left
Every board starts you with 2 to 5 shells. A wrong placement costs one; run out and the board is lost. Finish it and you keep whatever shells remain. Solve it clean and you keep them all; scrape through and you keep almost nothing. Solving and solving well are two different things.
■ Two-shell boards pay five times
196 of the 1,000 boards hand you only two shells. In exchange, everything you earn there is worth five times as much. One mistake ends the run, so your hands slow down — and that is exactly what makes them worth playing.
■ Your shells are your record
Every shell you've ever earned counts toward your standing. The board tells you how many more you need to move up one place.
■ Stuck? Take a hand
Have an otter placed for you, or take a hint that clears a full line. Even after a loss you can top your shells back up and pick up right where you stopped.
