Pendant plus de cinq siècles, ce livre a nourri des générations de chrétiens désireux de progresser dans la vie spirituelle et de tendre vers la sainteté. Lu et relu durant cinq siècles et demi, ce livre a formé des âmes désireuses de sainteté, les conduisant à se vaincre, à contempler le Christ en sa Passion et à se nourrir de sa vie dans l’Eucharistie.
Cet ouvrage est né au cœur d’un vaste mouvement spirituel des 14ème et 15ème siècles : la Devotio moderna. Ce courant, à la fois simple et concret, s’adressait aux âmes humbles et sincères, à une époque où la théologie scolastique s’était faite trop abstraite et intellectuelle.
En parcourant L’Imitation, on est frappé par la richesse biblique de ses textes : l’auteur y fait sans cesse référence à l’Écriture sainte, citant à lui seul 86 psaumes sur 150, 92 passages des prophètes et plus de 260 extraits de l’Ancien Testament. Pour le Nouveau Testament, on recense 193 références aux Évangiles, 13 aux Actes, 190 à saint Paul et 87 aux autres écrits.
Sainte Thérèse de l’Enfant-Jésus témoigne de l’importance de ce livre dans sa vie :
"Depuis longtemps je me nourrissais de "la pure farine" contenue dans l’Imitation, c’était le seul livre qui me fit du bien, car je n’avais pas encore trouvé les trésors cachés dans l’Évangile. Je savais par cœur presque tous les chapitres de ma chère Imitation, ce petit livre ne me quittait jamais ; en été, je le portais dans ma poche, en hiver, dans mon manchon, aussi était-il devenu traditionnel ; chez ma Tante on s’en amusait beaucoup et l’ouvrant au hasard, on me faisait réciter le chapitre qui se trouvait devant les yeux."
Lorsque la sécheresse spirituelle l’accable, "l’Écriture Sainte et l’Imitation viennent à mon secours, dit-elle, en elles je trouve une nourriture solide et pure".
Pour Thérèse, L’Imitation de Jésus-Christ fut à la fois une source d’inspiration et un guide de vie, le socle de sa “petite voie” vers Dieu.
Un tel héritage spirituel devrait nous encourager, nous aussi, à redécouvrir L’Imitation de Jésus-Christ.
