Wanneer er in drugs stoffen worden aangetroffen die een acuut gevaar vormen voor de volksgezondheid, bijvoorbeeld vervuilde XTC pillen zijn, of pillen met een extreem hoge dosering MDMA, wordt een Red Alert gestart.
Op dat moment worden gezondheidsinstanties en de media op de hoogte gebracht. Het publiek wordt op de hoogte gebracht door nieuwsberichten, posters en flyers op feesten. Het doel van een Red Alert is zoveel mogelijk mensen op de hoogte te brengen en daarmee het aantal incidenten zo klein mogelijk te houden.
