In India, the challenge of plastic waste is immense. Every year, the country generates about 13 million tons of plastic, but only 60% of this gets recycled. The rest, unfortunately, ends up in landfills, water bodies, or is burnt, causing significant environmental harm. Bisleri steps in with "Bottles for Change" to address this problem directly.
At the heart of Bottles for Change is the mission to educate and involve the public in responsible plastic handling. Bisleri believes that plastic, if mismanaged, is a pollutant, but with proper handling, it becomes a resource. The aim is to boost India's plastic recycling rate from the current 60% to a full 100%.
Education plays a key role in this initiative. Bisleri reaches out to various groups - residents of housing societies, students and staff in schools and colleges, employees in corporations, and patrons of hotels and restaurants. Through workshops and awareness sessions, the program teaches the importance of segregating plastic for recycling and proper disposal methods.
The recycling aspect of Bottles for Change involves a thorough process where collected plastic is cleaned, shredded, and melted to form new products. This not only conserves natural resources but also cuts down CO2 emissions, aiding in environmental preservation.
Collaboration is another cornerstone of this initiative. Bisleri has joined hands with numerous NGOs, recycling firms, and waste management entities to make this program a success. These partnerships are vital for the smooth collection and recycling of plastic waste. Moreover, the program supports many individuals in the recycling chain, offering them a means of livelihood and contributing to their social well-being.
