När barnen har förstått sambandet mellan bokstav och språkljud och börjar ljuda ihop sina första ord, behöver de öva på den nyvunna färdigheten och få flyt i läsningen. Bornholmsstugan är ett bland flera sätt för att få läsningen automatiserad.
Bornholmsstugan kombinerar läsning av enstaka ord och läsförståelse. Orden är alla ljudenligt stavade och följer en noggrann struktur. De är indelade i fem svårighetsnivåer.
Efter att orden övats på respektive nivå får läsaren tillgång till ett antal böcker i det speciella ”Läsrummet”, där de lästa orden nu kan tillämpas i löpande text. Några få ord med ljudstridig stavning kan förekomma i berättelserna, men dessa är då placerade i en mening, vilket underlättar läsningen och förståelsen av texten.
Att öva upp läsflytet på ett roligt sätt ger motivation för att vilja läsa mer. Detta utgör grunden för en gynnsam läsutveckling.
