The ESV is actually an update of the Revised Standard Version (RSV), which came out back in the 1950s. The RSV was known for its accuracy, but the language started to feel a little dated.
So, in the early 2000s, a team of scholars worked to update it, keeping the RSV’s strengths but making the language more accessible for today’s readers.
A translation that is both faithful to the original meaning and still flows naturally for modern English speakers. It’s this balance of accuracy and readability that’s made the ESV so popular.
