מילון ספיר החדש הוא אפוא המילון המעודכן והמקיף ביותר שקיים בשפה העברית.
אוצר המילים שבמילון לקוח מכל המקורות היוצרים את השפה העברית ויש בו ייצוג של מילים מכל התחומים, הרבדים, המשלבים ורמות הלשון. המילון מביא את כל מצאי המילים שבשפה, וההסברים מלאים, עדכניים ומפורטים, ניתנים בלשון מובנת וכוללים את הגוונים והפירושים של המילה בתחומים השונים שבהם היא משמשת. מילון ספיר החדש מציע פירושים והסברים בנדיבות, בבהירות ובקלות. מבחינות אלה הוא אכן מילון ההווה בכל המובנים.
כדי שהמילון יתאים לקהל היעד – שהוא האוכלוסייה כולה – הערכים כתובים בכתיב מלא שהוא כתיב ידידותי הרווח בפרוזה של ימינו, ובצד הערכים מופיעות המילים גם בכתיב מנוקד. כמו כן משופע המילון בניקוד-עזר המונע טעות בקריאה ובהבנה. זאת ועוד: השיטה הייחודית של הצגת הערך, הנהוגה בכל מילוני ספיר, שלפיה הצגת הפועל היא בזמן הווה, פוטרת את המעיין מהקושי למצוא את השורש – שיטה נושנה שעל פיה נוהגים לאתר את המילה במילונים אחרים – במיוחד למי שאינו בקי בנטיית הבניינים והגזרות. התוצאה היא המילון הידידותי ביותר למשתמש הנותן את המידע המבוקש תוך חיסכון של זמן רב באיתור מילה במילון זה לעומת כל מילון אחר.
העורך, איתן אבניאון, עוסק זה למעלה מעשרים שנה בעריכת מילונים ולקסיקונים. ספריו מתחלקים לשלושה: האחד, מילונים לשוניים, השני, לקסיקונים כלכליים-פיננסיים והשלישי, לקסיקונים כלליים. המילונים והלקסיקונים זכו להערכה רבה וחלקם הופיעו ברשימות רבי-המכר שבועות רבים. כל אלה הִקנו לו אצל רבים את התואר בכיר מילונאי ישראל כיום.
