WHAT YOU CAN DO
• Save collections, folders, and requests as plain, human-readable YAML. Commit them to Git like any other source. Secrets are kept out of the file.
• Use variables and environments everywhere: {{variable}} in the URL, headers, query, and body. A layered scope chain resolves them, with a live preview of the final URL, dynamic values like {{$guid}} and {{$timestamp}}, and ask-at-send prompts.
• Authenticate with nine schemes: Basic, Bearer, API Key, OAuth 2.0 (client-credentials and authorization-code with PKCE and token caching), OAuth 1.0a, WSSE, AWS Signature v4, HTTP Digest, and NTLM.
• Script, test, and chain requests: pre- and post-request JavaScript hooks, a test()/expect() assertion framework, a no-code Assertions tab, and "before" hooks that run other requests first and pass their results into the next one.
• Stream in real time: read Server-Sent Events into the response view, or open a two-way WebSocket (ws:// and wss://) session with a live transcript.
• Build any request: every method, query params, headers, and bodies for JSON, XML, GraphQL, text, form-urlencoded, multipart, and file uploads. Validate and Format buttons handle JSON and XML.
• Read responses clearly: raw, pretty JSON, XML, and HTML, plus headers. The status line reads like "200 OK · 1.2 KB · 87 ms". Save the full response to a file.
• Import from OpenAPI 3, Swagger 2 or WSDL, using a local file or a URL. Or paste a cURL command.
• Export any request to cURL, wget, JavaScript fetch, Python requests, or Go net/http.
• Keep a request history with secrets scrubbed, an in-memory cookie jar, and a drag-and-drop sidebar for reordering.
PRIVACY
Helena makes no automatic or background network requests. The only traffic is the requests you send. There is no account and no cloud sync. The optional Check for updates button queries GitHub only when you click it. Your collections, history, and settings stay on your machine, in the standard Windows config location.
OPEN SOURCE
Helena is open source under the BSD license and developed in the open. Installing from the Microsoft Store keeps it up to date automatically and supports its development.
