Apple's Wi-Fi Menu signal strength bars are not detailed enough to inform you just how fast (or slow!) your Wi-Fi network is performing. The sample pictures above all have 3 signal strength bars in the Wi-Fi System Menu, but by using WiFi Health you can see they had very different speeds.
The "WiFi Transmit Rate" is the speed used by your Wi-Fi radio to send packets to your Wi-Fi base station. If this first step is really slow, all of your Internet connections will be slow or even unusable.
Every few seconds the Mac's Wi-Fi automatically adjusts its Transmit Rate to try and get the best performance possible. For example it can speed it up if the radio signal from the base station gets stronger, or slow it down if there is too much traffic or an increase in radio frequency noise.
WiFi Health monitors the Transmit Rate and displays the current speed in the System Menu Bar. This lets you easily check it whenever you suspect your network is slower than usual. And with a single click it will bring up a simple graph showing the Transmit Rate, signal strength, noise levels and Signal-to-Noise ratio for the last few minutes.
WiFi Health works with any kind of base station and generates no additional network traffic. It is designed to be left running and always available for a quick glance to check on your Transmit Rate.
By itself, WiFi Health will not make your Wi-Fi faster. But it can help you to routinely monitor your Wi-Fi transmit speeds and possibly discover reasons for it being slow.
