Why are we doing this?
Owning a renewable energy installation is a long-term commitment — one that only pays off if you keep it running. Falling export compensation rates make that commitment harder to justify every year.
There's a system in the renewable energy industry called Unbundled Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) — credits that recognize the export of clean electricity and can be traded for profit. But individual homeowners are left out of that market: their export volumes are simply too small to justify the administrative and transaction costs involved. SuPia is our way of giving owners something in its place — a direct, tangible reward for the same clean energy contribution that the EAC market overlooks.
How carbon neutrality works, with renewable energy like yours
Every kilowatt-hour your installation exports to the grid replaces a kilowatt-hour that would otherwise come from fossil fuels — coal, gas, or oil. That displacement is the basis of carbon neutrality: it's not about removing carbon from the air, but about not putting more of it there in the first place. When thousands of homes do this simultaneously, the grid itself gets cleaner, megawatt by megawatt. Your rooftop panel or backyard turbine isn't a side project — it's a working part of the grid's decarbonization.
What your installation can do, together with everyone else's
A single household's export is small. But SuPia connects every owner's contribution into one collective record — neighborhood by neighborhood, city by city, region by region. What was once invisible — the combined clean energy output of thousands of individual installations — becomes visible, measurable, and significant.
That visibility matters beyond recognition. As more distributed installations are tracked together, they start to look less like scattered, isolated systems and more like what they actually are: a real, distributed electricity system, generating and exporting power across thousands of locations at once. Making that system visible is the first step toward making it count — toward utilities, regulators, and markets treating distributed owners not as a rounding error, but as significant contributors to the grid.
